Little Hoopsters (4 & 5 year old's)
The Parks, Recreation, & Facilities Department is excited to offer a basketball program that aims to give Portland children aged 4 & 5 years a positive first basketball experience.
Registration Deadline: Wednesday, November 4th
Program Goal:
To give your child a positive first experience of youth basketball.
Practices:
Each week your child's practice squad will experience new fun, game-based learning focused on basic basketball skills.
Dates:
Wednesdays, Dec. 2, 9, 16, Jan. 6, 13, 20 (make up date Jan. 26)
Times:
4 years of age - 4:30-5:00
4 years of age - 5:00-5:30
5 years of age - 5:30-6:00
5 years of age - 6:00-6:30
Location:
Amanda C. Rowe Elementary Gym, 23 Orono Rd, Portland
Practices Squads:
The aim is to have your child in a squad with no more than 9 other children with 2 volunteer coaches.
What to Bring:
Players must bring sneakers, comfortable clothing, and a water bottle.
Parents and caregivers must remain on-site
Picture Days: December 5th at Riverton Community Center and December 12th at East End Community Center.
Our program relies on volunteer coaches to operate, with each squad led by at least two co-coaches.

What's Involved?
Attending the mandatory coaches meeting on Wednesday, November 18, 5-6pm at Riverton Community Center, 1600 Forest Ave, Portland.
Sending a welcome email to your team parents and players
Organizing and coaching your team during the 45 minutes weekly practice
Reaching out to the recreation staff whenever support is needed
Directing parent or player inquiries that require staff assistance to the recreation team

If you are interested in coaching, please indicate your interest during your child's registration and complete the Volunteer Coach Form. Recreation staff will then send you a background check application. Once you pass the background check we will work with you to be ready for the coaches meeting and the start of the season.
If a coach completed a volunteer coach form after May 2026, they do not need to submit another form until May 2027.

Special Requests — Requests regarding carpooling, assisting neighbors with transportation barriers, or pairing a player with a friend can be submitted during the online registration process.
