The City of Portland is an Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross.
Sign up for a range of American Red Cross lifeguarding and water safety courses which can help you gain the skills and confidence necessary for providing care and instruction when it's needed most. Courses available include lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor™ training.
Course Options:

Course Fees:
- r.24 Lifeguarding: $315
- Water Safety Instructor: $400
Participants must attend all classes and pass all final tests in order to receive their certification. No exceptions.
Water Safety Instructor
- The Water Safety Instructor, also known as WSI™, course trains instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all age groups; plus Learn-to-Swim Levels 4-6 and Adult Swim. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors.
- WSI Course Prequisities:
- Minimum age: 16 at start of course.
- Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT) will be provided with the course.
- Demonstrate swimming skills by swimming the following strokes:
- Front Crawl – 25 yards, Back Crawl – 25 yards, Breaststroke – 25 yards, Elementary backstroke – 25 yards, Sidestroke – 25 yards, Butterfly – 15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
- Tread water for 1 minute.
