Course participants hired as a Lifeguard by the City of Portland are eligible for full reimbursement of the course fee upon completion of 200 hours of work as a Lifeguard within the first year of employment. The City of Portland is an Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross.
Sign up for a range of American Red Cross lifeguarding and water safety courses which can help you gain the skills and confidence necessary for providing care and instruction when it's needed most. Courses available include lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor™ training.
All courses offered combined online self-led work and in-person sessions.

Course Fees:
- r.24 Lifeguarding: $315
- Water Safety Instructor: $400
Participants must complete all self-led online work prior to first class, attend all classes and pass all final tests in order to receive their certification. No exceptions.

- Lifeguarding, including Deep water training over 7'
- Prerequisites for Lifeguarding include:
- Age: Students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.
- Skills: All lifeguarding participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking. The prerequisite skills assessments include a swim-tread-swim sequence and a timed event.*
- Throughout the course, participants will learn and be evaluated on knowledge and skills related to lifeguarding, water rescues, extrications, CPR and AED and First Aid.
- In addition, to obtain your Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, you must successfully complete 3 final skills assessments:
- Rotate in-conduct surveillance – rotate out, Timed Single-rescuer CPR Scenario, and Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario*
- You will need to take one final written exam consisting of 50 questions and score a minimum of 80%.
